The Dream Houses

Concept and maquette first developed in residence at Titanik Galleria, Turku, FI in 2023, continued and completed in 2026. 

This installation explores the strange interiors of the dwellings we encounter in our dreams and how these manifestations of the house and the home are internalized, interpreted, and navigated. The video projection consists of animated floor plans that are fragmented and layered in an attempt to depict these irrealities. Projected through angled glass windows and superimposed on 3D scans, these impossible mappings expand and contract as they are reflected around the space.

The sound composition is centered on domestic dream archetypes presented in texts on dream interpretation dating back to the second century, each a record of the fantasies and fears related to the house that exist in the collective unconscious. These are augmented with specific distortions of familiar interiors, such as the undiscovered room, the blocked-off stairwell, or the endless hallway. The text fragments are set against sounds recorded in hallways, stairwells, behind doors and through windows and convolved with resonances that create impossible concurrences of domestic space across distance and time, perception and imagination.

Texts include the Oneirocritica (Artemidorous, ca. 200 AD), Ibn Sirin’s Ta'bir al-Ru'ya, compiled in 700 AD, and Chen Shiyuan’s Lofty Principles of Dream Interpretation (16th century).
